Mookaite is a variety of radiolarite — a siliceous sedimentary rock composed largely of the silica tests (shells) of radiolarians, single-celled marine organisms. It is classified mineralogically as a form of chalcedony or chert, with a composition primarily of microcrystalline SiO2. Mohs hardness is 6 to 7. Its range of colors results from varying concentrations of iron oxide and other mineral impurities.
Mookaite is found only in Western Australia and is considered a sacred stone by some Aboriginal Australian communities, regarded as carrying the energy of the land itself and the memory of ancient ancestors who lived across that country for tens of thousands of years. and In modern crystal traditions, mookaite is associated with the dreamtime — the foundational Aboriginal concept of creation and spiritual existence — honoring its deep roots in one of the oldest living cultures on earth.
