Kambaba Jasper is quarried from a volcanic sequence in Madagascar's Bongolava region, where the same eruption that produced its quartz-and-pyroxene groundmass also left behind the radiating mineral clusters that read as circular eyes once the stone is polished. It reached the international gem trade under the Kambaba name relatively recently; South Africa is sometimes cited as a secondary source, though Madagascar remains the primary origin.

Kambaba Jasper is better classified as a fine-grained volcanic rock than a true jasper. Petrological analysis traces it to a rhyolite from Madagascar's Bongolava region, built from a quartz-rich groundmass threaded with sodium-iron pyroxene (aegirine) and radiating amphibole needles; the amphibole clusters are what crystallized into the stone's dark, eye-like orbs, while chlorite and other iron-magnesium silicates give the surrounding stone its deep green. This igneous origin means the orbs are a product of mineral crystallization, not fossilization, despite the stone's long-standing reputation as a fossilized colony of ancient algae.
