Fluorite is a calcium fluoride crystal that crystal workers have long called the stone of order. It is prized as the crystal for overcoming any form of disorganization, whether that is a cluttered desk, a crowded calendar or a crowded head. It cleanses and steadies the space around you and draws off the negative energy and tension that build up over a day. Collectors prize its glassy cubes and octahedrons in nearly every color, while those who work with it prize the steadiness it brings to thinking and feeling alike.
Item: One (1) Purple Fluorite beaded bracelet
Look: Translucent purple
Size: Choose your bead size above. Stretch cord, fits most adult wrists (about 6½–7½").
Note: Color and pattern vary from bead to bead. Photos show the typical look and may not show every bead size.
Fluorite is soft at Mohs 4 and cleaves easily, so store it away from harder stones and avoid knocks. Prolonged direct sunlight can fade its color. Because it contains fluoride, do not soak it or make elixirs by placing it directly in drinking water; use the indirect method instead.
Fluorite forms in veins and cavities where warm, mineral-rich fluids move through limestone and granite, often alongside quartz, calcite, barite and metallic ores. As those fluids cool, calcium and fluorine lock into cubes and octahedrons, and trace elements and natural radiation paint the ribbons of purple, green, blue and yellow that make each piece its own. The German scholar Georgius Agricola described it in 1530 under the name fluores, from the Latin fluere, to flow, because miners added it to ore to help the metal melt and flow during smelting.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, chemical formula CaF₂, a halide mineral that crystallizes in the cubic system as cubes, octahedrons and interpenetrating twins. It defines 4 on the Mohs scale, has a vitreous luster and perfect octahedral cleavage, and ranges from transparent to translucent in nearly every color. Many specimens glow under ultraviolet light, and in 1852 George Gabriel Stokes coined the word fluorescence from the mineral's name.
Fluorite is traditionally used to clear mental fog, sharpen focus and bring order to scattered thoughts. People keep it on desks and study tables, and it is long associated with filtering out stress from screens and busy spaces so you can think calmly and decide clearly.
Yes, but only briefly. Rinse it under cool running water, never soak it, and pat it dry, then recharge it on selenite or under moonlight. Keep it out of long stretches of direct sun, which can fade its color, and store it apart from harder stones since it is soft and cleaves easily.
Many fluorite specimens glow under ultraviolet light because trace elements in the crystal absorb the light and release it as visible color. The effect is so closely tied to this mineral that the word fluorescence was coined from its name in 1852.
Somewhat. Fluorite sits at 4 on the Mohs scale and has perfect cleavage in four directions, so a hard knock can split it cleanly. Handle it gently, keep it away from harder stones, and choose tumbled stones, spheres or carvings for everyday handling.
