About Dragon's Blood Resin

True Dragon's Blood Resin is not blood at all but a bright red resin exuded from the fruit of Daemonorops draco and related rattan palms native to Southeast Asia, with historical sources also naming Dracaena species among its origins. Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs describes it as a powerful protectant, whether carried on the body, sprinkled around a home, or smouldered as incense, prized above all for lending extra potency to whatever it is burned alongside. At Sage Spirits it comes as a dip on smudging products: Dragon's Blood Dipped Palo Santo Sticks (3) and the Dragon's Blood Dipped White Sage Bundle, where the palo santo or white sage carries the resin and the two burn together.

Item: One pack of three (3) dragon's blood dipped palo santo sticks

Look: Pale golden palo santo sticks coated in deep red dragon's blood

Size: About 4" long each.

Note: Natural materials vary in size, color and scent. Photos show the typical look. For smoke cleansing only; do not ingest.

Dragon's Blood Resin is a natural red resin exuded by Daemonorops draco and related palms, historically also sourced from Dracaena species. It has been used as a varnish, dye, and incense since antiquity.

  • Medieval traders claimed the resin was the dried blood of dragons slain in battle with elephants, which gave it both its name and its fierce reputation.
  • Scott Cunningham records the old practice of women burning dragon's blood at an open window at night to call a wandering lover home.
  • Folk magic holds that powdered dragon's blood mixed with sugar and salt, sealed in a bottle and hidden, brings peace and quiet to a noisy house.

Before you light it

How to use

  • Store it dry and away from heat, since the resin can soften and the red can rub off on fabric
  • Light the tip, let the flame catch, then blow it out and let it smoulder over a fireproof dish
  • Ventilate the room and never leave it unattended while it smoulders
  • Press the ember out in the dish when you are finished

Safety
For smoke cleansing only. Do not ingest. Burn with ventilation and never leave smouldering herbs or resin unattended.

Where it comes from

True dragon's blood comes from the fruit of rattan palms of the genus Daemonorops, native to Southeast Asia. In Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs it is described as a powerful protectant when carried, sprinkled around the house, or smouldered as incense, driving away negativity and lending extra potency to any blend it joins.
