Star Jasper forms as silica-rich sediment and volcanic ash slowly deposit into dense, cryptocrystalline quartz, with lighter feldspar or quartz inclusions crystallizing outward from central points to create the stone's namesake radiating pattern within a warm brown matrix. Much of the material in trade today comes from Madagascar, a region also known for its orbicular jasper deposits.

Star Jasper is a variety of jasper, an opaque, cryptocrystalline form of quartz built from microscopic silica crystals rather than one large lattice. The starburst pattern is an inclusion structure, light-toned mineral growth radiating outward through the darker brown groundmass, rather than a separate mineral species layered into the stone.
