About Moss Agate

Long called the gardener's stone, Moss Agate is a stabilizing crystal that keeps you connected to the natural world. In crystal tradition it is a stone of new beginnings that clears away blockages and, as a stone of wealth, draws in abundance. It works on two fronts at once, helping practical, analytical minds reach their intuition and helping intuitive people channel their insight into something usable.

Our Coffin Rings carry bold individuality with deep symbolism, made to sit close to the hand where their meaning stays close to you. Each ring features an ethically sourced, certified natural gemstone cut into a striking coffin shape, set in Silvaria.

The coffin shape represents transformation, mortality, and rebirth — a reminder worn daily to embrace change and live with intention. Designed for those drawn to gothic elegance, each ring is a quiet, powerful statement of strength and personal evolution.

About Silvaria: Silvaria is Nugent Jewelry's own silver alloy. A hardened core of 60% copper and 40% zinc is molecularly bonded with a 13 micron layer of pure silver, 13 times thicker than typical plating (1 micron). It resists tarnish, bending, and stone loss, and is made for everyday wear and designed to be hypoallergenic.

Pure silver resists tarnish for much longer than sterling. If it does tarnish, it shows gold and purple swirls that wipe away with a microfiber cloth. Silvaria is a bonded silver alloy, not solid sterling silver, an option for those who care most about the stone.

Moss Agate is non-toxic, water-safe, and durable enough for everyday wear. Cleanse with lukewarm water and mild soap, and skip harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Crystals should never replace professional medical care.

Moss Agate forms when silica-rich water seeps into cavities and fractures in volcanic rock and slowly hardens into chalcedony, a compact form of quartz. As it sets, iron and manganese oxides, and green minerals such as chlorite or hornblende, crystallize inside the stone in branching, plant-like patterns. Despite its name, no plant is ever present; the moss is pure mineral. It is a common stone, found in India, the United States, Brazil, Uruguay, and Australia, and the gravels of Montana's Yellowstone River are among its best-known sources.

Moss Agate is a translucent-to-opaque variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz with the chemical formula SiO₂. It is not a true agate, since it lacks concentric banding; its green, brown, or reddish dendrites are inclusions of iron and manganese oxides or minerals such as chlorite and hornblende. It measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, belongs to the trigonal crystal system, and has a waxy to vitreous luster.

  • In his Natural History (1st century AD), Pliny the Elder listed a 'tree-agate' distinguished by marks resembling small trees, and recorded the Persian Magi's claim that the fumes of burning agates could turn away storms and waterspouts.
  • In folk tradition Moss Agate became the gardener's stone: growers hung it on plows, tools, and the horns of oxen, trusting its mossy figures to call in a rich harvest and healthy crops.
  • Its old trade name, 'Mocha stone,' comes from the port of Mocha in Yemen, a place long associated with the trade in these dendritic stones and the tiny landscapes sealed inside them.
What is Moss Agate good for?

Moss Agate is traditionally used for new beginnings and steady growth. It's kept close to ground restless energy, ease deep-rooted tension, rebuild self-esteem and invite abundance through patient effort. Long called the gardener's stone, it's a favorite for anyone starting over or tending something new.

How do you cleanse Moss Agate, and can it get wet?

Yes. Moss Agate is water-safe and non-toxic. Rinse it under lukewarm running water with a little mild soap, pat it dry, then recharge it overnight on soil, beside a living plant or under moonlight. Skip harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, and store it apart from harder stones so it keeps its shine.

Is there real moss inside Moss Agate?

No. The moss is pure mineral. Its green, brown and reddish branches are inclusions of iron and manganese oxides or minerals such as chlorite and hornblende, which crystallized inside the chalcedony as it hardened. No plant material is ever present.

Is Moss Agate a true agate?

Strictly speaking, no. Moss Agate is chalcedony, the same microcrystalline quartz that agate is made of, but it lacks the concentric banding that defines true agate. It takes its name from the moss-like figures inside it rather than from bands of color.
