  • Origin Story

Labradorite crystallized deep within slowly cooling magma, forming inside large igneous bodies such as anorthosite. It was first identified in 1770 on the coast of Labrador in Canada, where Moravian missionaries encountered it and carried it back to Europe. The prized full-spectrum Finnish variety, spectrolite, was later uncovered near Ylamaa. Today much of the world's labradorite is mined in Madagascar, alongside deposits in Canada, Finland, Russia, and Greenland.

  • Scientific Info

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, part of the solid-solution series between albite and anorthite, with the general formula (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its signature play of color, called labradorescence, is an optical effect: light scatters off microscopic layers within the stone, producing flashes of blue, gold, green, and occasionally violet. The base body color ranges from smoky gray to near black, while the yellow variety appears transparent.

  • Ancient Myths

Inuit legend holds that the Northern Lights were once trapped inside the coastal rocks of Labrador until an ancestor struck them free with his spear, and the fire that stayed behind is the flash seen in the stone today., Among northern peoples the stone was carried as a talisman of the threshold, believed to hold a doorway between worlds and a link to ancestral spirits., and Folk tradition regarded labradorite as a stone of destiny, worn by seers and shamans to uncover hidden truth and glimpse what was to come.

  • Affirmation

I trust the quiet knowing that rises from within me. I am shielded as I follow my intuition, clear-minded through every change, and strong enough to meet what transformation asks of me.
