About Moonstone

Moonstone is a feldspar gem, orthoclase laced with fine layers of albite, prized for the glow that seems to float just beneath its surface. In crystal tradition it is the stone of new beginnings and one of the most trusted companions for emotional steadiness, intuition and dreamwork. Judy Hall describes it as a mirror, like the moon itself, reminding us that everything moves through cycles of waxing and waning.

Item: One (1) polished Earth Moonstone tumbled gemstone

Look: Mixed peach, cream and gray with a soft sheen

Size: Size ranges are listed in the size options.

Note: Each stone is one of a kind. Photos show the typical look and may not show every size.

Safe to handle and non-toxic, but moonstone has perfect cleavage and can chip or split with a sharp knock. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, harsh chemicals, salt and long soaks, and store it apart from harder stones.

Moonstone has been treasured since antiquity: the Romans believed it was moonlight made solid, and its older name, hecatolite, honors the Greek goddess Hecate. Its variety name adularia was coined in 1780 by Ermenegildo Pini for the Adula Massif in the Swiss Alps. Myanmar once produced the finest transparent stones with a strong blue sheen, and Sri Lanka leads commercial production today.

Moonstone is a feldspar made of potassium-rich orthoclase and sodium-rich albite that separate into microscopically thin alternating layers as the host rock cools. Light scattering between these layers creates adularescence, a floating blue to white sheen; thinner layers give a bluer glow. It has the general formula (Na,K)AlSi3O8, crystallizes in the monoclinic system, shows perfect cleavage and rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

  • Ancient Romans believed moonstone was formed from solidified rays of moonlight and linked it with their moon goddess Diana.
  • In India, moonstone has long been regarded as sacred and was believed to be made of frozen moonlight, a stone of sweet dreams and good fortune.
  • Its old name, hecatolite, honors Hecate, the Greek goddess of the moon, the night and the crossroads, and the Greeks likewise tied the stone to their lunar deities.
What is Moonstone good for?

Moonstone is traditionally used as a stone of new beginnings. People keep it close to calm heightened emotions and soften reactions to emotional triggers, to strengthen intuition and empathy, and to encourage vivid, lucid dreams, especially around the full moon.

How do you cleanse Moonstone, and can it get wet?

Yes, briefly. Wipe it with a soft cloth and lukewarm, mildly soapy water, then dry it, but skip salt, harsh chemicals and long soaks. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, since its perfect cleavage can crack. Recharge it on selenite or under moonlight, and store it apart from harder stones.

Is rainbow moonstone real moonstone?

Not strictly. Rainbow moonstone is a trade name for white labradorite that shows a multicolored glow. It's a close feldspar cousin with the same kind of floating light, but true moonstone is orthoclase layered with albite and usually shows a single white to blue sheen.

What causes Moonstone's glow?

The glow, called adularescence, comes from two feldspars, orthoclase and albite, that separate into microscopically thin alternating layers as the rock cools. Light scatters between those layers, and the thinner they are, the bluer the sheen looks as you turn the stone.
