Apatite is a phosphate mineral group occurring in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock formations across the globe, and is uniquely significant as the mineral basis of vertebrate teeth and bone. Gem-quality specimens are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, and Myanmar, and span a vivid range of colors from electric teal-blue to neon green and warm yellow. Named from the Greek for "to deceive" due to its persistent misidentification as other minerals, Apatite is now valued in crystal work for its clarity-enhancing, motivating, and communicative properties. It is the reference mineral for Mohs hardness 5.0.
