If someone asks you to smudge them, say yes only if you feel comfortable, ask what they would like to release, and then guide the smoke of a smoldering sage bundle slowly around their body from head to feet. That is how to smudge someone in its simplest form: their consent, a clear intention, and a few unhurried minutes of smoke. You do not need special training or perfect words, only care and attention.
Being asked is a small honor, and it is normal to feel unsure the first time. Smudging another person comes from Indigenous traditions of North America, where burning sacred plants is ceremony. The most respectful approach is to keep it simple and sincere rather than inventing something elaborate.
What You Need
You need a bundle of white sage or another cleansing herb, a fire-safe bowl to catch the ash, a lighter or matches, and a room with a window open. Our Smudging & Cleansing collection carries California white sage along with blue sage, cedar, yerba santa, and palo santo. Our sage comes from Southern California farms and harvesting partners who cut only mature growth, then hand-tie and sun-dry each bundle, and you can read the details in our Sage Sourcing Promise.
How to Smudge Someone, Step by Step
- Ask first. Confirm they are comfortable with smoke, and ask about asthma or smoke sensitivity before you light anything.
- Set the intention together. Ask, "Is there anything in particular you would like to let go of today?" Their answer shapes everything that follows.
- Light the bundle. Hold the tip in the flame for a few seconds, let it catch, then gently blow it out so it smolders. Keep the bowl underneath to catch embers.
- Start at the head. With the person standing and their arms slightly away from the body, use your hand or a feather to guide the smoke around the head, then down the front of the body to the feet. Keep the bundle several inches from hair and clothing.
- Move to the back. Repeat from the head down the back, slowing at the shoulders, and finish at the feet.
- Close it. Tell them you are finished and give them a quiet moment. Press the bundle firmly into the bowl until no smoke remains, and never leave it smoldering unattended.
What to Say While Smudging Someone
Words are optional. Silence and steady breathing work well, and the person's own intention matters more than anything you recite. If you would like something to say, keep it plain and speak slowly.
- "May this smoke carry away whatever feels heavy."
- "May what no longer serves you return to the earth."
- "May you leave here feeling lighter and more like yourself."
If they follow a particular faith or tradition, invite them to offer their own prayer instead.
Crystals That Support the Practice
Stones are not required, but a few have long been paired with smoke cleansing.
| Stone | Traditionally used for | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Black Tourmaline | Protection and grounding | Place it at their feet, or let them hold it |
| Selenite | Clearing stagnant energy from a room or an aura | Pass a wand slowly around the body after the smoke, or in place of it for anyone who cannot be around smoke. Keep it dry. |
| Clear Quartz | Amplifying an intention | Let them hold it while they name what they are releasing |
| Amethyst | Calming a busy mind | Keep it nearby, or offer it to hold afterward |
When to Say No
You are allowed to decline. If you feel drained, rushed, or uneasy, or if the setting is not safe for an open ember, it is kinder to say "not today" than to go through the motions. You can offer to show them how to smudge themselves instead, which is how smudging is often done: they cup the smoke in their hands and draw it over the head, the heart, and the rest of the body.
The next time someone holds out a bundle and asks, you will know what to do. Ask, light, move slowly from head to feet, and put the ember fully out. The rest is simply paying attention to the person in front of you.
