  • Origin Story

Smoky Quartz forms wherever quartz grows near trace aluminium and a slow bath of natural radiation from surrounding granite. Over long spans of geological time that radiation shifts electrons within the crystal lattice to create color centers, deepening clear quartz into tan, brown, and near-black. It is found the world over, with celebrated deposits in the granite peaks of Scotland and the Swiss Alps, the pegmatites of Brazil and Madagascar, and the high country of Colorado.

  • Scientific Info

Smoky Quartz is a macrocrystalline variety of quartz, silicon dioxide (SiO2), crystallizing in the trigonal system. Its smoky brown-to-black color comes not from an added element but from natural gamma irradiation acting on aluminium impurities in the lattice, forming light-absorbing color centers. It shows a vitreous luster, ranges from transparent to translucent, and registers 7 on the Mohs scale. Very dark, fully opaque material sold as smoky quartz is often artificially irradiated.

  • Ancient Myths

In the Scottish Highlands it is called Cairngorm, after the mountains where it was gathered, and was set into the hilts of dirks and worn as brooches in traditional Highland dress as a mark of protection and standing., Twelfth-century Chinese magistrates are said to have worn flat panes of smoky quartz over their eyes in court, using the darkened stone to hide their expressions while judgment was passed., and Across old European folk tradition the darker earth-toned quartzes were carried as amulets against ill will and unsettled spirits, valued for their tie to the ground beneath the feet.

  • Affirmation

I am rooted to the earth and steady in myself; as I hold Smoky Quartz, fear loosens its grip, heaviness drains away, and I stay calm, clear, and quietly resolved through whatever the day asks of me.
