About Silver Obsidian

Silver Obsidian, also sold as silver sheen obsidian, is natural volcanic glass: silica-rich lava that cooled too quickly to form crystals. Its silver shimmer is not a coating or a polish. It comes from sheets of microscopic gas bubbles trapped in the glass and stretched flat as the lava flowed, which catch the light when the stone is turned. Most pieces on the market come from Mexico, with more from the obsidian fields of the western United States. Crystal tradition singles it out among the obsidians as the one that enhances meditation and is best suited to crystal gazing.

Our Coffin Rings carry bold individuality with deep symbolism, made to sit close to the hand where their meaning stays close to you. Each ring features an ethically sourced, certified natural gemstone cut into a striking coffin shape, set in Silvaria.

The coffin shape represents transformation, mortality, and rebirth — a reminder worn daily to embrace change and live with intention. Designed for those drawn to gothic elegance, each ring is a quiet, powerful statement of strength and personal evolution.

About Silvaria: Silvaria is Nugent Jewelry's own silver alloy. A hardened core of 60% copper and 40% zinc is molecularly bonded with a 13 micron layer of pure silver, 13 times thicker than typical plating (1 micron). It resists tarnish, bending, and stone loss, and is made for everyday wear and designed to be hypoallergenic.

Pure silver resists tarnish for much longer than sterling. If it does tarnish, it shows gold and purple swirls that wipe away with a microfiber cloth. Silvaria is a bonded silver alloy, not solid sterling silver, an option for those who care most about the stone.

Natural glass: chipped or broken edges are extremely sharp, so handle rough pieces with care and keep them away from small children. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not ingest or use in elixirs.

Silver Obsidian is a trade name for obsidian that shows a silver sheen. It forms at the edges of silica-rich lava flows, where the melt cools too quickly to crystallize. Layers of microscopic gas bubbles, stretched flat by the moving lava, were frozen into the glass and now reflect light as a silver shimmer. Most material comes from Mexico, with more from the obsidian fields of the western United States.

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, typically 70 percent or more silicon dioxide (SiO2) with aluminum, sodium, potassium and iron oxides. It is amorphous, with no crystal structure, and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. The silver sheen is an optical effect caused by light reflecting off aligned layers of microscopic gas bubbles within the glass. Hardness is about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale.

  • The Aztec god Tezcatlipoca, whose name means Smoking Mirror, was depicted with an obsidian mirror, and Mexica priests used polished obsidian mirrors for divination. The story belongs to obsidian as a whole, not to the silver variety alone.
  • John Dee, adviser to Elizabeth I, used a polished obsidian mirror of Aztec origin in his attempts to speak with spirits. The mirror is now held by the British Museum.
  • Pliny the Elder wrote in the first century that obsidian was named for Obsius, a Roman who found the stone in Ethiopia, and described dark obsidian mirrors that gave back shadows rather than clear images.
What is Silver Obsidian good for?

Silver Obsidian is traditionally used as a meditation and gazing stone. People reach for it to quiet a scattered mind, take an honest look at themselves, and build patience for slow work, while keeping obsidian's long association with protection and grounding.

How do you cleanse Silver Obsidian, and can it get wet?

Yes. Rinse it briefly under cool running water and pat it dry, then recharge it in moonlight or beside Clear Quartz. Avoid hot water and sudden temperature changes, which can crack the glass, and handle chipped pieces carefully because the edges are sharp.

What causes the silver sheen in Silver Obsidian?

The sheen comes from layers of microscopic gas bubbles trapped in the volcanic glass and stretched flat by the flowing lava. Light reflects off those layers, so the silver appears and disappears as you turn the stone. It is not a coating or a polish.

Is Silver Obsidian a crystal or glass?

It is natural volcanic glass. Silver Obsidian formed when silica-rich lava cooled too quickly to grow crystals, so it has no crystal structure and is classed as a mineraloid. Silver Obsidian is a trade name for this silver-sheen variety of obsidian.
