Botswana Agate (Pink) Tumbled Gemstone

Botswana Agate is a stable, non-toxic silica stone and is safe to handle and wear. It tolerates brief contact with water, but prolonged soaking is unnecessary and strong, extended sunlight can slowly fade its softer bands.

Botswana Agate formed hundreds of millions of years ago inside ancient volcanic flows in what is now Botswana. As silica-rich fluids seeped into gas cavities left in cooling lava, they hardened layer upon patient layer, each band recording a slightly different mineral moment. Mined chiefly near Bobonong in the country's east, it was named simply for the land that produces it.

Botswana Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, the cryptocrystalline (extremely fine-grained) form of quartz. Its concentric bands of pink, grey, apricot, and white are the result of rhythmic silica deposition inside volcanic cavities, with trace iron and manganese tinting the layers. It shares quartz chemistry, silicon dioxide, and rates near the top of everyday durability on the Mohs scale.

• Agate takes its name from the Achates River in Sicily, where the Greek natural philosopher Theophrastus is said to have first identified the banded stone in the fourth century BCE.
• Pliny the Elder recorded that farmers in the Roman world tied agates to plows and to the horns of oxen, trusting the layered stone to bring a plentiful harvest.
• Across the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East, agate amulets were carried as protection against storms, fevers, and scorpion stings, and were said to quench thirst when held in the mouth.
