About Black Onyx

Black Onyx is the solid black form of onyx, a chalcedony in the quartz family, and the one most people picture when they hear the name. It has been worn for centuries as a stone of strength, self-mastery and composure. Nearly all of it is chalcedony treated to a deep, even black, a long-accepted practice that we state plainly rather than hide.

Our Coffin Pendants blend bold individuality with deep symbolism, worn close to the heart. Each pendant features an ethically sourced, certified natural gemstone cut into a striking coffin shape, set in Silvaria.

The coffin shape represents transformation, mortality, and rebirth — carried with you as a reminder to embrace change and live with intention. Designed for those drawn to gothic elegance and symbolic jewelry, each pendant is a powerful statement of strength and personal evolution.

On an adjustable 16 inch chain with a 2 inch extender.

About Silvaria: Silvaria is Nugent Jewelry's own silver alloy. A hardened core of 60% copper and 40% zinc is molecularly bonded with a 13 micron layer of pure silver, 13 times thicker than typical plating (1 micron). It resists tarnish, bending, and stone loss, and is made for everyday wear and designed to be hypoallergenic.

Pure silver resists tarnish for much longer than sterling. If it does tarnish, it shows gold and purple swirls that wipe away with a microfiber cloth. Silvaria is a bonded silver alloy, not solid sterling silver, an option for those who care most about the stone.

Nearly all Black Onyx is chalcedony treated to an even black. The color is stable in normal wear, but avoid long soaking, harsh chemicals, and ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Not for elixirs or ingestion.

Onyx has been cut, carved and worn since antiquity, and the solid black form became the jeweler's standard once stonecutters learned to darken pale chalcedony evenly. Most of the rough worked today comes from the agate fields of Brazil and Uruguay, with further supply from India.

Black Onyx is chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz (silicon dioxide). In strict gemological terms onyx is chalcedony with straight parallel bands, classically black and white. Naturally solid black chalcedony is uncommon, so nearly all Black Onyx on the market is gray chalcedony or agate permanently darkened by a sugar-and-acid or heat treatment, a practice with roots in antiquity that became standard in the gem trade in the 19th century.

  • The Greeks named the stone onyx, their word for a fingernail or claw. In one telling, Cupid trimmed the nails of the sleeping Venus and the clippings, too divine to perish, turned to stone where they fell.
  • Old lore holds that onyx keeps the memory of whatever happens to the person wearing it, which made it a stone of secrets and a favorite for psychometry, the reading of an object's history by touch.
  • Tradition said that onyx worn at the neck cooled desire and encouraged restraint, an early version of its lasting reputation as the stone of self-control.
What is Black Onyx good for?

Black Onyx is traditionally used for strength, self-control and steadiness under pressure. People carry it through demanding stretches to stay grounded, quiet overwhelming worries, keep their own counsel and make clear decisions, and it has long been worn as a guard against unwanted influence.

How do you cleanse Black Onyx, and can it get wet?

Yes, briefly. Rinse it under cool water and dry it with a soft cloth, but do not soak it. Cleanse with smoke or sound and recharge it on selenite or in moonlight. Keep it away from harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and steam, and store it apart from harder gems.

What is the difference between Black Onyx and Onyx?

Onyx, strictly speaking, is chalcedony with straight parallel bands, classically black and white. Black Onyx is the solid black form, which is the one most often sold and worn. Both are the same quartz-family mineral and share the same tradition of strength and self-control.
