About Howlite

Long before it carried a Latin name, Howlite was simply a chalky white mineral scattered through Nova Scotia's gypsum beds — a stone with no ancient pedigree, discovered only in 1868 and named for the chemist who first identified it. What it lacks in mythology, it makes up for in versatility: soft, porous, and endlessly dyeable, Howlite has spent over a century quietly filling in for costlier stones, most famously as the blue 'Turquenite' sold in place of true turquoise. In its natural, undyed state, it remains one of the steadiest calming stones in the crystal-healing tradition, prized for settling an overactive mind and easing a short temper.

Also known as White Howlite, White Buffalo Stone, Silicoborocalcite, TurqueniteCare Howlite is safe to handle and wear. It is soft and porous, so avoid prolonged water exposure, ultrasonic cleaners, and harsh chemicals, which can strip dye or dull the surface. Much of the blue material sold as 'Turquenite' or 'white turquoise' is dyed Howlite (sometimes dyed Magnesite) rather than genuine Turquoise — a distinction worth knowing before you buy.
